CHD Information and Statistics

One in every hundred babies are born with a heart condition. This makes Congenital Heart Defects the most common birth defect in Australia. There are approximately 40 identifiable birth anomalies and syndromes that are classified as CHDs.

 The table below lists Congenital Heart Defects as described in the International Classification of Diseases code. The list is sorted from most common (VSD) to the rarest conditions. For more information on individual disorders, including statistics based on the National Perinatal Statistics Unit (Australia) data for 1981-97, select an entry from the table.
